The breakdance battle party in Queens

We had seen a poster online, saying there was a hiphop party in queens, at this place called La Oveja Negra. We had no idea where that would be, but decided to get over there and check it out.

The breakdance battle party in Queens
People formed a circle, and one after another the performers jumped in to dance.

Writing down the address, we went on the subway to Queens, and entered a random cab. The driver seemed confused, I had obviously written the address wrong. But at least he managed to get us off on the right street. We got some directions, and saw a sign for La Oveja Negra on 4th floor, but no indication on how to get in. And the street was so quiet, it really did not seem like a party was going on.

A guy walked past, and he showed us the way to an elevator in a health club. Opening the elevator door, we were greeted with loud hip-hop music, and about a hundred people hanging out and breakdancing.

The event was Battle of the Boroughs, dance crews of 3 people would compete against each other, in a big circle of people in front of the DJ booth.

We saw some amazing moves in there, 5-feet head slides, jumping on one arm, spinning on the elbows. And I liked the contest between two guys about who could do the most freezes without their feet touching the floor. The winner managed 6 different 3-second freezes with only his hands touching the floor.

The dancers were incredibly skilled, and they were challenging each other to do different moves. There was an announcer as well, shouting comments at the performers. The performers were usually dancing alone, but once in a while a second guy from the same crew would enter the ring - the presenter shouted "Routine" as they did crazy stunts over each others bodies.

After the party ended around midnight, we ended up on the sidewalk outside the club, talking to some of the performers. We got directions to some local bars, even if we had trouble with the communication at times. We asked one girl where we could have a good time, and she looked at us weirdly, and gave us directions to some "whore places" a few blocks away. A few laughs later we were on our way to a local beer garden.

We got in there, and the place was huge! And the beer mugs were huge as well. We sat down next to the prettiest girls we could find, they were mostly from eastern Europe, Poland and Croatia. The Beer Garden was closing, so we went with the girls to a smaller bar, and got a couple more drinks in before everything finally closed at 4.

You should have been there, mate - it was awesome! The breakdance thing was so raw, no programmed light shows or rehearsed introductions - I loved it!

Dancing all night at Webster Hall

Dancing all night at Webster Hall At the hostel reception, we met the cutest little asian girl we had ever seen: Kelly from Singapore. She told us she had just arrived, and had just signed up to the Club Tour arranged by the hostel. We signed up immediately, of course!

Battery Park and the Statue of Liberty cruise

Battery Park and the Statue of Liberty cruise After a few intense days of partying and being mostly hung over doing nothing during the days, we decided we should finally get our act together and do some touristy stuff. It was a bit late when we finally got up and moving, but we eventually managed to get on a subway all the way down to South Ferry, to go see the Statue of Liberty.

Drinking games at the hostel - I am moosemaster!

Drinking games at the hostel - I am moosemaster! We were tired and hung over, and just wanted to do nothing. But the crew at the hostel wanted to go out clubbing, and how could we resist? So after a quiet day midtown, we headed back to the hostel, dressed up, and someone pulled out a deck of cards.

Learning breakdance at the Graffiti Wall of Fame

Learning breakdance at the Graffiti Wall of Fame I'd really been looking forward to this: A visit to the Graffiti Wall of Fame in Harlem. And we were fortunate to have Alyssa, the hip hop dance teacher with us as well! We took the subway up there and had so much fun playing around in that schoolyard!

Day 3 - Getting our art on

Day 3 - Getting our art on After doing nothing yesterday, except sleeping in late and mindlessly walking around looking at the bright and shiny lights of Time Square, we had to do something crazy wild today. And what sounds more crazy then going to the new museum of contemporary art? El nada!

Roadtrip!! Desperately trying to get to a concert on time

Roadtrip!! Desperately trying to get to a concert on time We had two Jay-z tickets and one problem: The concert was like 200 miles outside the city, in a indian reservation called Mohegan way up in Conneticut. So we figured we had to rent a car to get there. And thus our US road trip began:
