Day 3 - Getting our art on

After doing nothing yesterday, except sleeping in late and mindlessly walking around looking at the bright and shiny lights of Time Square, we had to do something crazy wild today. And what sounds more crazy then going to the new museum of contemporary art? El nada!

Day 3 - Getting our art on
There´s all kinds of cool graffiti and other wall decorations around New york.

The day started off pretty well. Subway sandwich for breakfast, tasty and nutritious! Whop whop! Topping that off, we got handed free money on the street. Obama on the bill, a million dollars? Hey wait a minute! This is more fake then monopoly money :(

Two subway rides later we're in lower east side manhattan. Awesome map navigation by Oyvind ensured us a quick trip from the subway to the gallery. Even though 2 out of 3 floors of the gallery were shut down due to maintenance, we payed up and strolled in.

The c
oolest thing inside was the live art. Live art, you say? Indeed!, I say. In the middle of the gallery, there was a white bed, with white sheets and a girl sleeping in it. Apparently she is fed a bunch of sleeping pills, transforming her into 'live art'. A real life sleeping beauty. A Chinese dude got this brilliant idea back in '77. Sounds like the best job ever to me! Id sleep the hell out of that bed, but apparently you have to be a woman.

Other slight interesting stuff where introduction videos of random MySpace profiles taken out of context and clipped together. "PLZ comment on my picturez!1" I wont go into more detail on that one.

Next stop was a floor with a live archive of the most important happenings from 1970ish to today. The chairs were the best thing there. Comfy!

Bing! Elevator arrived!  We went to the top floor, the observation deck, or something, which gave us a pretty nice overview of the surrounding neighborhood. We snapped of a few pictures.

Fast forwarding a bit, we're outside in the park, watching a local basketball game. Fun stuff. Except for sucking at free throws, they were very good! Also, commentator-dude with the megaphone was pretty funny. Ghetto slang, and all.

Time is about 4 p.m., we head back in to town (after taking the subway further away from the city of course, realizing we're heading into Brooklyn (I blame the dude with the glasses :P)).

After exiting the subway in Time Square, we're greeted by 5 fire trucks blasting their sirens. As the cam whores we are, we exploited the opportunity to pose by the trucks. Red and shiny! Then we found a park, got chased off the grass for some reason, and went home and took a nap (sweet relief).

In the last chapter of the day, we went to a Brazilian restaurant and ordered some proper food for once. Pretty nice! Also, hot fire sprouting plate on the table = no touchy.  After emptying our pockets, leaving a mountain of single dollar bills, we go back to the hostel where we randomly meet up with Alyssa who just arrived. She's a crazy dance girl from Canada we met the first day, with a hate for Pringles so great, it threatens our very existence.

Tired from all the walking, the rest of the evening we hang out in the lounge with a few other people staying in the hostel. Thats a wrap!

I hope the girl haven't slept there since 77. But wait, she still looks kinda good. So maybe sleeping does help?

Dancing all night at Webster Hall

Dancing all night at Webster Hall At the hostel reception, we met the cutest little asian girl we had ever seen: Kelly from Singapore. She told us she had just arrived, and had just signed up to the Club Tour arranged by the hostel. We signed up immediately, of course!

Battery Park and the Statue of Liberty cruise

Battery Park and the Statue of Liberty cruise After a few intense days of partying and being mostly hung over doing nothing during the days, we decided we should finally get our act together and do some touristy stuff. It was a bit late when we finally got up and moving, but we eventually managed to get on a subway all the way down to South Ferry, to go see the Statue of Liberty.

Drinking games at the hostel - I am moosemaster!

Drinking games at the hostel - I am moosemaster! We were tired and hung over, and just wanted to do nothing. But the crew at the hostel wanted to go out clubbing, and how could we resist? So after a quiet day midtown, we headed back to the hostel, dressed up, and someone pulled out a deck of cards.

The breakdance battle party in Queens

The breakdance battle party in Queens We had seen a poster online, saying there was a hiphop party in queens, at this place called La Oveja Negra. We had no idea where that would be, but decided to get over there and check it out.

Little Italy, Chinatown and bringing the party to the hostel

Little Italy, Chinatown and bringing the party to the hostel We were doing an experiment, drunken shopping in the daytime. One beer on each pub, then move on. We went through SoHo this way, then decided to start a party at the hostel.

Learning breakdance at the Graffiti Wall of Fame

Learning breakdance at the Graffiti Wall of Fame I'd really been looking forward to this: A visit to the Graffiti Wall of Fame in Harlem. And we were fortunate to have Alyssa, the hip hop dance teacher with us as well! We took the subway up there and had so much fun playing around in that schoolyard!

Roadtrip!! Desperately trying to get to a concert on time

Roadtrip!! Desperately trying to get to a concert on time We had two Jay-z tickets and one problem: The concert was like 200 miles outside the city, in a indian reservation called Mohegan way up in Conneticut. So we figured we had to rent a car to get there. And thus our US road trip began:

We have arrived!

We have arrived! After a delightful flight (yes, really!), a couple of train rides and a unlicensed taxi ride we finally arrived at Jazz hostel on Times Square. Hanging out on the hostel was more interesting than we thought, especially the roof was awesome!
