Last night in NYC - East Village

After spending the entire day shopping at Macy's, we went with Kelly to an Ethiopian restaurant, then out to a small jazz bar for the best cocktail ever!

Last night in NYC - East Village
How the hell are we supposed to eat this!? :-)

Macy's was kinda cool, and if you want to buy perfume, watches or accessories the first floor is great! We didn't though, so we headed up to the second floor, and found a huge selection of men's clothing. Different brands in every corner, they had stuff for any taste.

Later that night, we teamed up with Kelly again, and went out to Meskel Ethiopian Restaurant in East Village. We arrived kinda late, at like 9 pm or something. We met two of the local guides on the hostel, and a few people who lived in New York. It was kinda nice to get a different perspective on things compared to only hanging out with tourists.

Ethioptian food is very different, you get a huge platter with different stuff, and you´re supposed to dip some kind of bread into the platter and pick up different kinds of sauce, lentels, meat etc. And the bread you're supposed to use, felt like a kind of spongey material, almost like a kitchen rag or something. Weird!! It was however very good, even if Chris felt his stomach working hard the entire night.

After the restaurant we went a couple of blocks north in East Village, into a small bar where a jazz band was playing. It's so great that you can go out to a random bar on a monday night in New York, and there's actually a band playing! Even if they were only 2 of them, the music was beautiful and really set a nice mood the the evening.

The bartender was very good, and after I tried a couple of drinks, I got him to recommend one for me. He came up with The Green Hornet, which is Gin, Cointreau and Fresh Lime Juice chilled straight up in a martini glass. It was delicious, and I have to learn making those at home now!

We took a short trip by the Meatpacking district afterwards, but only got to see one street and one bar before we had to go home. Tomorrow was our last day, and we had to get up kinda early.

The last day we got up early and packed our things. I suddenly realized I had forgotten the camera outside, and it was raining! I ran up the stairs to get it, found it, and picked it up from a puddle. I was sure it was done for, but thankfully it was fine after it just dried up!

Also, we found the missing iPod! It was standing upright on the side wall of the security locker, and we only found it because we almost tipped the security locker over while packing..

This was our last day, and we met up with Kelly again for breakfast, and went shopping for an iphone for Chris. Then the time came for us to leave, and it was kinda sad. I'd have loved to stay longer, and I really hope I can come back one day!

Top of the Rock, Central Park, and a great night at the comedy club!

Coutinuing with the touristy stuff, we went to the Top of the Rock to see the amazing views of the city from up there. Afterwards we walked up fifth avenue to Central Park, and in the evening we met up with Kelly and went to Comedy Corner.

The Top of the Rock exhibition lets people walk on the roof of the Rockefeller building, which is almost as tall as the Empire State Building, but just not as famous. However, it has a bit fewer people, a great view through only glass fences, and you can actually take pictures of Empire State Building from the rooftop.

Central Park
We were feeling tired after being out dancing all night, so we went up to central park to chill out. The park is huge and beautiful, with a lot of little hills, ponds and rivers. We found some space on the grass by a river, and relaxed there for a couple of hours.

Central Park has a lot ot interesting stuff, but we only got to see a small part of it. One interesting thing was the bicycle freeway, it looks lika normal road but there's only bicycles in the different lanes. Weird and very cool! Hanging out (and sleeping) in a park is the best cure ever for hangovers, and I was feeling a lot better on the way home.

The Comedy Club
In the evening we and Kelly were going to a comedy club. It was called Comedy Corner, and had many different performers doing short stand-up shows back to back. It was very cheap to enter (only $7) but a 2-drink minium.

The first guy was kinda funny, but after that, Greer Barnes (check out this youtube vid) came on. We laughed so much from his offensive racist jokes (which he of course got away with because he was black). "I was running in Central Park the other day - chasing a white guy". And he told a great story about two black guys playing ping pong in the streets of Harlem, and how the police considered such things "suspicious activities".

The next performer obviously felt the pressure, because he could not tell a decent joke at all! After 15 minutes of painful awkwardness, he finally gave way to the next performer, who kinda tanked as well.. We were getting worried, watching comedians not being funny is horrible!

Fortunately, the next one was funny as hell, and from there on it was back to back with good shows until the club closed at midnight. We went outside (kinda got thrown out, they were closing). We were hanging out, taking pictures outside the club, and went on to find another bar. Then we bumped into the very funny second performer from the comedy show! We talked for a while, and he told us he had been on the Chapelle Show.

Random bars in the Village
We went into a bar with live music in the basement, "Cafe Wha?". They also had a 2-drink miniumum (yeah, people are crazy in New York). So we sat next to the band, took some more pictures, had a bunch of drinks and just had a lot of fun. That place had a great amosphere, so cool that you can just walk randomly down the street in Greenwich Village and find a great place like this within the first 2 blocks.

We decided to move on, and went to another bar next door. They had a sunday special on drinks, only $3 per drink. Considering how we had been paying 8-10 pr drink the last couple of days, this was pretty awesome! So we got as much as we could carry (which was 7 drinks), and raced through them to see who would get the 3rd one. Chris won the 7th drink, and afterwards we went downstairs to the bar, to finish the night off with a bang: tequila shots for everyone!

Dancing all night at Webster Hall

At the hostel reception, we met the cutest little asian girl we had ever seen: Kelly from Singapore. She told us she had just arrived, and had just signed up to the Club Tour arranged by the hostel. We signed up immediately, of course!

The french guy Anas joined us as well, and two guys and two girls from another hostel also went with us to the club. It was way past midnight when we arrived, because the guy arranging the tour was very late. Taking the subway when you go out really sucks, I think taxis are a lot easier - and even a lot faster in the evenings.

The club was the famous Webster Hall, which also does a lot of live music. It turned out that a lot of well-known artists like Prince and Madonna have played there, and Linkin Park shot a live concert on one of its floors in 2007.

Tonight was an event called Circus, with jugglers, clowns etc performing in the middle of the club. 3 of the 5 flooers were open: Club tunes on first, House on second, and Hiphop in the basement.

We stayed mostly on the first floor, and had soooo much fun dancing, we never really sat down or stood still. During the night, we made up a lot of stupid dance moves: like the poker face, or snapping our fingers and rolling our head sideways, and Chris did an awesome Running Man!

Getting drunk and dancing silly dances with people we hardly knew was a lot more exciting than I could have imagined. I was worried that the clubs would be pretentious, but we had so much fun just being silly and joking around, it was great! :-)

Battery Park and the Statue of Liberty cruise

Battery Park and the Statue of Liberty cruise After a few intense days of partying and being mostly hung over doing nothing during the days, we decided we should finally get our act together and do some touristy stuff. It was a bit late when we finally got up and moving, but we eventually managed to get on a subway all the way down to South Ferry, to go see the Statue of Liberty.

Drinking games at the hostel - I am moosemaster!

Drinking games at the hostel - I am moosemaster! We were tired and hung over, and just wanted to do nothing. But the crew at the hostel wanted to go out clubbing, and how could we resist? So after a quiet day midtown, we headed back to the hostel, dressed up, and someone pulled out a deck of cards.

Day 3 - Getting our art on

Day 3 - Getting our art on After doing nothing yesterday, except sleeping in late and mindlessly walking around looking at the bright and shiny lights of Time Square, we had to do something crazy wild today. And what sounds more crazy then going to the new museum of contemporary art? El nada!

Roadtrip!! Desperately trying to get to a concert on time

Roadtrip!! Desperately trying to get to a concert on time We had two Jay-z tickets and one problem: The concert was like 200 miles outside the city, in a indian reservation called Mohegan way up in Conneticut. So we figured we had to rent a car to get there. And thus our US road trip began:
